On August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255, a McDonnell Douglas MD-80, took off from Detroit Metropolitan Airport bound for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Just minutes after takeoff, the plane experienced an engine failure and crashed in Romulus, Michigan, killing all 156 people on board.

The crash of Flight 255 was one of the deadliest aviation disasters in U.S. history and remains one of the most thoroughly investigated accidents in NTSB history. The investigation revealed that the crash was caused by a combination of factors, including a faulty engine design, inadequate pilot training, and a lack of oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In the wake of the crash, the NTSB issued a number of recommendations to improve aviation safety, including requiring airlines to install smoke detectors in their cargo holds, improving pilot training, and increasing FAA oversight of airlines.

Unsafe at Any Altitude is the unforgettable story of the Flight 255 disaster, told by the survivors, investigators, and families of the victims. It is a gripping account of one of the most tragic events in aviation history, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of aviation safety.
